ABOUT

Gicherori factory was opened in 1997 and is operated by the Kibugu Farmers Cooperative Society (F.C.S.). There are around 1,050 smallholder farmer members, who deliver their cherries to the factory the same day it's harvested.

One of our top 4 Kenya selections for 25/26, this lot brought exciting Kenyan flavours and bright acidity to the cupping table. We've opted to start off with a bang, and are roasting this for espresso.

Context

Kibugu Farmers Cooperative Society's Gicherori lot represents a fully washed Batian from Kenya's Kibugu region in Embu. Fully washed processing emphasizes the clean, bright qualities characteristic of East African coffees, allowing the varietal's inherent fruit-forward profile to emerge clearly. This lot delivers blackcurrant and apricot notes alongside brown sugar sweetness—a combination typical of quality Kenyan coffees that balance berry intensity with subtle sweetness. Roasted by Seven Seeds, Gicherori offers an accessible entry point into Embu's coffee tradition, where volcanic soils and highland conditions create favorable growing environments. Use the flavor wheel to explore how these tasting notes connect to broader sensory categories.
