Burundi / Bahire

This is another delicious coffee from JNP coffee, this time a washed bourbon. The folks at JNP noted that there was always one coffee from the Ngozi Province that scored higher than the others from the region. They set a goal to track down the specific hill where this special coffee grows and connect with the farmers at Bahire Coffee. It is extra special for JNP’s founder, Jeanine, as this is the region her mother is from. Bahire in Kirundi means “be well”.

JNP is the brainchild of Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian. Jeanine is dedicated to reinvesting in the communities. JNP gets its coffees through education about coffee cultivation practices, profit sharing, and most notably, gender equity initiatives. Women in Burundi still lack full property ownership rights and have less access to education, and JNP seeks to disrupt these norms by directly paying women for their work in coffee and providing them with financial literacy resources.

The roaster identifies molasses sweetness alongside dried fruit and floral notes—a profile that suggests the bright acidity and structured mouthfeel typical of Burundian coffees. Bourbon contributes both the sweetness and the fruit-forward character here, with rose hip adding a delicate, slightly tart dimension that enhances the overall complexity.
