From the roaster

250 grams of whole roasted coffee beans.

Ngurueri sits at 1,760m on the slopes of Mt. Kenya in Embu County, surrounded by red volcanic soil, 1,100mm annual rainfall, and temperatures of 12–26°C — ideal conditions for exceptional coffee. It serves ~1,500 smallholder farmers as part of the Murue Farmer's Cooperative Society.

Processing follows strict quality standards. Cherries are handpicked and delivered same-day, sorted, pulped, and fermented for 12–48 hours. After full washing and grading, the coffee dries on raised beds over 2–3 weeks.

Sustainability is central — wastewater pits protect local water sources, and farmers are encouraged to plant shade trees alongside coffee.

Farmer Support includes training in good agricultural practices, advances on farm inputs, and financial assistance for schools and farm improvements — ensuring both quality and community wellbeing remain at the heart of Ngurueri's mission.

Context

This washed coffee from Murue Farmer's Cooperative Society in Embu County showcases Kenya's signature bright acidity through a carefully curated blend of classic and modern varietals—SL 28 and SL 34 alongside newer cultivars Batian and Ruiru 11. The washed processing typical of Kenyan coffees emphasizes clarity and complexity. At 1760 meters, the Embu terroir contributes to the coffee's distinctive fruit-forward character.

Da Matteo's tasting notes reveal jammy sweetness anchored by stone fruit and dark berry notes—clementine and papaya balanced against black currant's deeper tones. This profile exemplifies how Kenya's high-altitude, volcanic soils and traditional processing methods yield coffees with layered fruit expression. The varietal diversity here creates a nuanced cup, bridging heritage cultivars known for complexity with disease-resistant selections bred for sustainability.
