Gathaithi Coffee Factory is part of the Gathaithi Farmers’ Cooperative Society in Nyeri County. Established in 1967, the factory is supported by 1656 active members with smallholder farmers cultivating coffee on typical half-acre plots.
Gathaithi sits between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare ranges. Rich red volcanic soils, cool temperatures and 1100mm of annual rainfall create strong growing conditions for coffee. Cherries are selectively handpicked at peak ripeness and delivered to the wet mill the same day. After sorting, the coffee is pulped, fermented overnight, washed, soaked, and dried on raised beds for 7 to 15 days, with regular turning and hand sorting throughout the process.
This lot reflects the clarity and structure associated with Nyeri; clean, vibrant, and shaped by careful processing and smallholder expertise.

Context
This washed Kenyan espresso from Code Black Coffee originates in Nyeri County at 1100 meters above sea level, where the Gathaithi Coffee Factory processes the beans using traditional washed methods. The region is recognized for producing coffees with bright acidity and layered fruit character—qualities evident in this lot's berry and citrus notes balanced with sweetness. Washed-process coffees from Kenya's central highlands typically exhibit cleaner cup profiles with more pronounced complexity than their natural-processed counterparts, allowing the inherent origin characteristics to shine. This espresso should highlight those regional markers while maintaining the intensity the roaster has developed for machine brewing.
