Kenya Karnewthi
Roasted by Saint Frank Coffee
Dynamic Kenyan coffee with distinctive plush qualities from higher Batian proportion.

From the roaster
Karuthi always delivers the dynamic and classic flavors we love in Kenyan Coffees but with a distinctive twist. The wider range of altitude along with a higher proportion of Batian in the varietal composition yields some darker more plush qualities to the always classic Central Kenyan profile.
We nearly gave up on our pursuit of the relationships in Kenya where the ever shifting market landscape is like swimming against the current. It was in Karuthi and the Othays Farmers Cooperative Society that we found a partner and sure hand to hold against that upstream current.
Our friendships formed across every level have born the fruits we almost believed weren't possible. From the export level at KCCE to the Othaya Cooperative and Adminstration level to the Karuthi Factory level in particular with Manager James. We love James! This coffee has been a staple on our menu since 2018 and we thrilled to be able to continue investing in this friendship and offering its fruit to our friends here.

Context
This Kenya Karnewthi from Saint Frank Coffee showcases the Batian varietal grown by Othays Farmers Cooperative Society in the Karuthi region. The roaster characterizes this coffee as dynamic yet classic, with a darker roast profile that emphasizes plush body—a style that tends to highlight the structured sweetness and weight characteristic of Kenyan coffees processed through traditional methods.
Batian, a modern East African hybrid, is valued for its disease resistance and balanced cup potential. Saint Frank's roasting approach here appears calibrated to draw out the fuller-bodied expressions this varietal can offer while maintaining the coffee's fundamental character. Those seeking to explore the specific sensory dimensions can reference the flavor wheel as a guide to articulating tasting impressions.
