Single O Japan was established in 2014 in Ryogoku, Tokyo, as the first international location of the Australian specialty coffee brand Single O, originally founded in Sydney's Surry Hills in 2003 by Dion and Emma Cohen under the name Single Origin Roasters. The Tokyo operation was set up by Yamamoto Tori, who had spent seven years gaining experience at the Sydney headquarters. Working closely with the Australian parent company, Single O Japan handles green coffee procurement, importing, quality control, roasting, and barista training with a deliberately small team. The company prioritizes direct trade with producers, bypassing intermediaries, and has developed close relationships with farmers and cooperatives worldwide, including providing secondary financial support for infrastructure such as drying facilities and clean water access. In 2021, a flagship café, Single O Hamacho, opened in Nihonbashi-Hamacho, and in 2024 a café was added to the Ryogoku roastery. Single O Japan currently operates multiple Tokyo locations and also offers wholesale services.
