Huye Mountain Coffee was founded by David Rubanzangabo in 2012, building on experience gained within Rwanda’s coffee sector since 1998. Beginning with 500 smallholder farmers, the project now works with more than 1,300 producers across Huye District, supporting quality and sustainability through training and micro-loans for farm improvements. Grown at high elevations in Rwanda’s mountainous south, this lot is 100% Bourbon, a variety well suited to the region’s volcanic soils, regular rainfall and warm sunshine. Huye has become recognised as one of Rwanda’s leading coffee-producing areas, with Huye Mountain consistently placing highly in competitions such as the Cup of Excellence. For this natural process lot, ripe cherries are carefully hand-selected and float-sorted before drying on raised African beds for 3–4 weeks. Slow drying allows sugars and fruit character to develop gradually, creating clarity alongside sweetness and intensity. Over the past two decades, Rwanda’s coffee sector has shifted from volume-driven production towards quality-focused speciality coffee, supported by investment in co-operatives, infrastructure and processing. The result is a fruit-forward, expressive cup that reflects both the region’s terroir and the precision of its production.
