Stumptown Coffee Roasters

Founded by Duane Sorenson in Portland in 1999, Stumptown Coffee Roasters became one of the defining names of the American third wave, helping popularise direct trade — buying coffee straight from farmers at premium prices and publishing those relationships. Its expansion to New York, Seattle, and Los Angeles in the late 2000s, along with its early bottled cold brew, brought specialty coffee to a much wider audience. Stumptown's blue-and-red branding and Hair Bender espresso blend became cultural touchstones. Acquired by Peet's parent company in 2015, it remains a historically pivotal roaster that shaped sourcing ethics and café culture across the US.
